S. lfurphy, 110 College Street, this City, again appeared before <br /> <br />Council and complained of the apparent unsatisfactory sewerage facilities <br /> <br />on College Street; however, in response to the Council1s sUGgestion, lir. <br /> <br />Hurphy agreed to effect certain recommendations submitted by the Department <br /> <br />of Public Horks which, it was thought, would alleviate the conditions of <br /> <br />which hE! complained. <br /> <br />,- <br /> <br />In response to a request from Lacy Hanufacturing Company for a larger i-later <br /> <br />line, CODncil reiterated its long-standing policy in s~L1ch matters and, also, <br /> <br />pointed out the lac..1{ of available funds for such work even were the policy <br /> <br />itself not established. <br /> <br />~- <br />i~ <br />v> <br /> <br />~ <br /> <br />Appropriate recognition was taken by the Council of the successful efforts of <br /> <br />both the local paid and volunteer fire companies in their 1952 fire prevention <br /> <br />progran in which they were awarded first place among all Cities in Virginia, <br /> <br />third place among all Cities throughout the United States within 11artinsville's <br /> <br />class (under 25,000 population) and twelfth place among all Cities of all <br /> <br />classes throughout the United States. Special recognition ivas tcl~en by Council <br /> <br />of the Hark of the Steering Committee, composed of Er. Shelton Scales, Fire <br /> <br />Marshal Easterly, and Assistance Fire C~ief Harrison, and of the fine wo~~ of <br /> <br />Hiss Glc.dys E:ro~m iVho prepared the EYJ1ibi t upon which the m.Jards lJere rnade. <br /> <br />Having been advised that the Appalachian Electric Pm..rer Company has been granted <br /> <br />a rate increase by the State Corporation Conrraission effective Februar~y 1, 1953, <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />the Council appointed a Special Committee (composed of Councilmen J. R. Halker <br /> <br />and D. ;1. Goode, City Hanager Nathe..Json, and Utilities Director I-f. F. Graves) <br /> <br />to give immediate consideration to the matter of increasing local electric rates <br /> <br />to parallel the neVl rates of t',e Appalachian firm.
