3

TUESDAY

OCTOBER 14. 1952

The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsvil1e,
Virginia, with Mayor R. S. Hodnett presiding, was held in the Council Chamber,

City Hall, on Tuesday, October 14, 1952, at 7:30 o'cloCk P.M., the following

members being present: Mayor and Councilman R. S. Hodnett, and Councilmen

C. P. Craig, W. T. Turner, and J. R. Walker, - Councilman D. H. Goode being

absent.

Minutes of the regular Council meeting held September 23, 1952, upon being read,

were approved.

Noting the presence of Mr. J. L. Gregory, Jr., member of the City School Board,

Council deferred its regular order of business to hear Mr. Gregory and any other

~"
~o
~~
~

visitors present who might wish to be heard. Mr. Gregory appeared on behalf of

the School Board. to answer any questions the Council might have in connection

with the School Board's request that the City purchase two houses and lots on

Ellsworth Street from the T. G. Burch Estate. It was the Board's recommendation

that the City purchase said property, exercising for the School Board. an option

it had to acquire said property for $16,000.00 from the Burch Estate, assuring
the Cit.y that it could dispose of that portion of said property (the two houses
and some 119 feet of land) not needed for school purposes for approximately the

same amount as it would pay for it, leaving some 93 feet for school purposes;

in the event, however, the full purchase price is not realized in re-se11ing the

property, the School Board would absorb through its current budget the difference;

whereupon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried by recorded vote, Council

appropriated the sum of $16,000.00 for the purchase of said Ellsworth Street

property and, at the same time, authorized the increasing of current estimated

revenue by the same amount to be realized as aforestated.
