S. Hodnett presiding, was held in the Council Chamber, <br /> <br />City Hall, on Tuesday, September 9, 1952 at 7:30 o'clock P.M., all members, <br />as follows, being present: Mayor and Councilman R. S. Hodnett, and Councilmen <br /> <br />C. P. Craig, D. H. Goode, W. T. Turner, and J. R. Walker. <br /> <br />Minutes of the regular Council meeting held August 26, 1952 and of the special <br />Council meetings held September 1, 1952 and September 3, 1952, upon being read, <br /> <br />were approved. <br /> <br />Noting the presence of visitors, Council deferred its regular order of business <br /> <br />to hear such visitors wose spokesman was W. B. Muse and wo presented the <br /> <br />~Z" <br />li~ <br />i <br /> <br />fo11oving petition from the Albert Harris Parent-Teacher Association in connection <br />with their request for a sidewalk on the North side of Fayette Street between <br /> <br />Smith Road and West Church Street: <br /> <br />SUBJ:EX:T: Side valks on the Northerly side of Fayette Street <br />between Smith Road and West Church Street <br /> <br />TO : Ci ty Council Martinsville, Virginia <br /> <br />FIDM : PTA, ALBERT HARRIS SCHOOL <br /> <br />Some months ago favorable action vas taken by you gentlemen <br />on the above subject project. However, we were later advised that the <br />work would have to be held up pending definite information about the <br />grade level of the By-Pass at Fayette Street. <br /> <br />It is our request that in view of the many dangers facing <br />school children coming to sChool that your decision to delay the project <br />be re-considered as the welfare of over 200 small children is at stake. <br /> <br />,- <br /> <br />In making this request it is recognized that possibly some <br />savings could accroe by your knowing the final grade level of the By-Pass <br />but the financial aspect tends to minimize itself' when we observe our <br />small children climbing in and out of the gutter as traf'f'ic moves to <br />and fro in this block. <br /> <br />We humbly request an inspection of this area during peak school <br />hours so that a first hand report can be derived concerning our fears. <br />
