r
....
L

'IUESDAY

SEPT>>fi3ER 9, 1952

",-

The regular semi-4JlOnth1y meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsvi11e,
Virginia, with Mayor R. S. Hodnett presiding, was held in the Council Chamber,

City Hall, on Tuesday, September 9, 1952 at 7:30 o'clock P.M., all members,
as follows, being present: Mayor and Councilman R. S. Hodnett, and Councilmen

C. P. Craig, D. H. Goode, W. T. Turner, and J. R. Walker.

Minutes of the regular Council meeting held August 26, 1952 and of the special
Council meetings held September 1, 1952 and September 3, 1952, upon being read,

were approved.

Noting the presence of visitors, Council deferred its regular order of business

to hear such visitors wose spokesman was W. B. Muse and wo presented the

~Z"
li~
i

fo11oving petition from the Albert Harris Parent-Teacher Association in connection
with their request for a sidewalk on the North side of Fayette Street between

Smith Road and West Church Street:

SUBJ:EX:T: Side valks on the Northerly side of Fayette Street
between Smith Road and West Church Street

TO : Ci ty Council Martinsville, Virginia

FIDM : PTA, ALBERT HARRIS SCHOOL

Some months ago favorable action vas taken by you gentlemen
on the above subject project. However, we were later advised that the
work would have to be held up pending definite information about the
grade level of the By-Pass at Fayette Street.

It is our request that in view of the many dangers facing
school children coming to sChool that your decision to delay the project
be re-considered as the welfare of over 200 small children is at stake.

,-

In making this request it is recognized that possibly some
savings could accroe by your knowing the final grade level of the By-Pass
but the financial aspect tends to minimize itself' when we observe our
small children climbing in and out of the gutter as traf'f'ic moves to
and fro in this block.

We humbly request an inspection of this area during peak school
hours so that a first hand report can be derived concerning our fears.
