<br />,- <br /> <br />,- <br /> <br />~- <br />il <br />i <br /> <br />, <br />, <br /> <br />WEDNESDAY <br /> <br />SEPT:amm 3, 1952 <br /> <br />A special and organizational meeting of Martinsville City Council, adjourned <br /> <br />from September 1, 1952, was held in the Council Chamber, City Hall, on Wednesday, <br /> <br /> <br />September 3, 1952, at 9:00 A. M., in accordance with the provisions of paragraph <br /> <br /> <br />5. (a), Chapter Two of the Charter of the City of Martiru:;ville, Virginia, as <br /> <br />approved by the Virginia Gereral Assembly M.arch 14, 11.950, at which meeting all <br /> <br />CounCilmen, as follows, duly elected to terms beginning September 1, 1952, were <br /> <br />present: C. P. Craig, D. H. Goode, R. S. Hodnett, W. T. Turner, and J. R. Walker, <br /> <br />with City Attorney Stone acting as temporary Chairman, and with City Circuit Court <br /> <br />Clerk Jesse D. Clift administering oaths of office. <br /> <br />Further, in accordance with current Charter provisions, lots were drawn to <br /> <br />determine which two Councilmen shall serve on the present new Council for two- <br /> <br />year terms and whic h three Councilmen shall serve for the next four years. As a <br /> <br />result, Councilmen Walker and Goode drew the two-year terms and Councilmen Hodnett, <br /> <br />Craig, and Turner drew the four-year terms. <br /> <br />'!he Council then pt'oceeded to elect its officers for the rext two years with <br /> <br />former Mayor Walker, seconded by Councilman Goode, nominating Councilman Hodnett for <br /> <br />Mayor. There being no other nominations for this office, the nominating was closed <br /> <br />and Councilman Hodnett was unanimously elected Mayor. Next, upon motion of Councilman <br /> <br />Turner, seconded by Coun::::ilman Walker, the name of Councilman Craig was presented far <br /> <br />the office of Vice-Mayor. T'nere being no other nominations, the nominating was closed <br /> <br />and Councilman Craig was unanimously elected to the office of Vice-Mayor. <br /> <br />Mayor Hodnett then, in assuming t.1<J.e duties of permanent Chairman, expressed his <br /> <br />appreciation for the honor conferred upon him by electing him Mayor and, also, <br /> <br />revealed that while it had been the Council's desire the former Mayor vYalker continue <br />
