Summary of Installations~ <br /> <br />The following summary includes some of the major projects which <br />have been completed during the tenure of the committee: <br /> <br />(1) Installation of new boilers: <br /> <br />(2) Nine plants have made changes in fuel distribution in <br />an effort to reduce smoke emission. <br /> <br />(a) One - 200 HP Unit <br />(b) One - 750 HP Unit <br />(c) One - 400 HP Unit <br /> <br />(3) Five plants have installed special smoke control de- <br />vices such as over-fire jetS. <br /> <br />(4) One plant has diverted a portion of the boiler load <br />to electric power in order to reduce demand on over- <br />loaded unit. <br /> <br />(5) Several plants have installed special focued mirrors <br />in order boiler firemen may observe smoke emission <br />without having to leave boiler room for such observa- <br />tions. (This visual aid has proven to be a very <br />valuable device in the boiler rooms using the <br />installation). <br /> <br />D. Anticipated Installation~: <br /> <br />The following summary includes some of the potential installa- <br />tions which were disclosed by the survey: <br /> <br />1. One industry has plans to install a central boiler <br />unit and place present units on standby status. <br />(This is definite). <br /> <br />2. One plant indicated consideration of a plan to divert <br />boilers to natural gas fuel when such is available. <br /> <br />3. A detail study of fuel, with an objective of smoke con- <br />trol, has been indicated in several of the units <br />included in this summary. <br />(This is actively being carried on now in a number of <br />plants). <br /> <br />4. The management of 19 establishments expressed approval <br />of and a desire to participate in the training pro- <br />gram for boiler firemen. (Only eight are included in <br />the present schedule. The reason for limit is noted <br />in Paragraph E). <br /> <br />- 3 - <br />
