<br />l04 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />FEBRUARY 24, 1959 <br /> <br />of assessed valuation will yield approximately the same property tax revenue-- <br />excluding taxes on new construction added as of January 1, 195$--that the 1958 <br />tax levy produced and, further, that the Board of Equalization has been appointed <br />and has organized and that the Board has requested that Council indicate a tax <br />rate that is contemplated for the 1959 tax year. Council, thereupon, informally <br />and tentatively indicated a real estate tax rate of $1.80-to-$1.85, expressing its <br />intention that local property taxes shall be no more overall than those assessed <br />in 195$. Councilman Brown recommended that, in Council's consideration of local <br />taxes, Council consider amending the City's Business and Professional License <br />Tax Ordinance whereby the business license taxes on local manufacturers might be <br />reduced or abolished. Council requested that this matter be placed on the agenda <br />for consideration. As a matter of record in these minutes, the Board of Equalization <br />recently appointed by Judge John D. Hooker of the Seventh Judicial Circuit Court <br />is composed of Mr. Henry T. DeShazo, }fr. W. Sherman Donavant, Mr. J. Charles Jones, <br />Dr. E. M. McDaniel, and Mr-. Benjamin W. Via. At its organizational meeting held <br />February 24, 1959, the Board elected Mr. Via as chairman and Mr. Jones as secretary. <br /> <br />In order that members of Council might attend another meeting on March 10th-the <br />evening for Council's next regular meeting--Council ordered that its l>1arch 10th meeting <br />shall convene at 6:30 P.M. instead of the usual 7:30 P.M. <br /> <br />Residents of Hairston Street, by letter, complained of what they termed excessive <br />smoke and soot in the area and, also, requested the installation of street lights on <br />that street. The Smoke-and-soot complaint was referred to Fire Chief Easterly <br />through City Manager Hirst and the street-light-installation requested placed on <br />file for consideration during the preparation of the City's 1959-60 budget. <br /> <br />City Manager Hirst reported that Miss Ethel Stanley has agreed to sell her property <br /> <br /> <br />on Moss Street, adjacent to the "Sale" property at the corner of Moss and Church <br />
