370

TUESDAY

OCTOBER 28, 1958

The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville,

Virginia, with Mayor John W. Shultz presiding, was held in the Council Chamber,

City Hall, Tuesday, October 28, 1958, at 7:30 P.M., the following members being

present: Mayor and Councilman John W. Shultz; Vice-Mayor and Councilman E. E.

Stone; and Councilmen R. S. Brown, Jr. and Thomas J. Burch.

After the invocation Council approved as read minutes of its regular meeting
held October 7, 1958.

City VJanager Hirst reported on developments to date in connection with efforts

to provide sewer service for the new Druid Hills School on Indian Trail. After

some discussion, in which several suggestions were made, and upon authorization

of Council, Mayor Shultz appointed a special committee (composed of Vice-Mayor

Stone, Councilman Burch, City Manager Hirst, and City Attorney Taylor) to consider

the various suggestions, to make a study thereon, and to submit its recommendations

to Council at its next regular meeting.

Council acknowledged receipt of a letter from the Garden Study Club endorsing

Councilman Brown's proposal that certain large trees interferring with City

electric lines be replaced with small flowering trees and that the Electric

Department's tree-trimming program be discontinued insofar as these large trees

are concerned. City Manager Hirst presented a schedule in which it was estimated

that such a revised program related to principal streets would cost $4,760.00,

whereupon Council ordered that the currently-followed tree-trimming program be

discontinued pending consideration by Council in the preparation of the City's

1959-60 Budget of a systematic tree replacement program.
