<br />3, <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />AUGUST 26. 1958 <br /> <br />In connection with the request filed August 12th by the McCabe Memorial Baptist <br /> <br />Church that their non-revenue-producing properties be declared exempt from the <br /> <br />City's utility tax, Attorney General A. S. Harrison, Jr., of the Commonwealth <br /> <br />of Virginia, in response to City Attorney Taylor's inquiry, by letter of August <br /> <br />19th, declared that he knows of no provision of law which requires the City <br /> <br />of Martinsville to exempt churches from this tax. Council, thereupon, denied <br /> <br />the request. <br /> <br />City Manager Hirst informed Council that arrangements and plans have been made <br /> <br />to conduct a public meeting September 8, 1958, at 7:.30 P.M., in the Patrick <br /> <br />Henry School auditorium, for the purpose of discussing with all parties <br /> <br />concerned on-street parking conditions and regulations in the downtown business <br /> <br />Me", <br />',~;::: <br />"Ii'>! <br />ti <br /> <br />district. <br /> <br />On behalf of property owners of and/or residing on Druid Lane, Messrs. Robert <br /> <br />L. Cannupp and James H. Hayden informed Council that all owners of property <br /> <br />on this street, with the exception of two corner lots at Druid Land and Old <br /> <br />Danville Road (outside the corporate limits) have agreed to participate and <br /> <br />therein requested the construction of curb-and-gutter on this street in <br /> <br />accordance with the City's policy (outside property owners to pay 100% of the <br /> <br />cost). Council authorized the construction in keeping with the City's policy <br /> <br />and its construction schedule. <br /> <br />City Manager Hirst and City Attorney Taylor informed Council that Virginia <br /> <br />",..,- <br /> <br />Attorney General A.
