In the early staGes of considering a
road between Ch"U."':'C"1 street anc' Cle<:'Tvierr Drive first surveys were for a route
that would generi:"~lly parallel closely the Corolin2,:'Jlcl l:ortLvrcstern Railroad
and follow Doyle street throu;::h the Lester Branch valley to 1\'yack Road and
thence throuC;h L'nc~c,.'eloped country on to Clear-vicr; :;""1'ivo. Problems rclating
to right-oi'-vray acquisition along with foreseeable construction difficulties led
the City to evaluate a new route at a hi~her clev9tion. It I"ras this new route
that has been selected which will present, less construction cost due to distance
and availability of ri~:ht-of-I"T2.Y. During right-of-way negotiations severe.l
modifications vrere mc.de in tbe new route.
Heports have been J1tcde to City Council at various staGes in consideration
of the road and the City COlmcil, after :r-8vievrinc: the l!roject, gave its agree-
ment to the ul')per level route.
The primary purpose of the proposed road is to provide a t:>:>affic connection
between the north and east areas of the City. It is also considered that the
road will re1ic,ve V'.c C.~ow;l-ta\"rn business streets of some traffic which must now
pass directly tJ1rOllgh the dovm-tovm district in orrJer to reach different areas
of town.
The route is not intended to serve as or offset a possible future northern
by-pass as has been considered in the City for ::'. mmber of years. However,
should such a by-pass be built portions of this new road could serve as a section
of the by-pass and the remaininz sections would be valuable as connecting streets.
The new roadway is e..v.::pected also to ol)en for developr, ent sections of the City
through which it 1)8.sses and vlhich it connects.
The intersection of the new road with Church Street will be designed in
anticipation of the planned vJideninc and rebuilding of Church street (Danville
Road) .
