Taylor, Jr., whom Council appointed <br /> <br />on May 31st to the office of City Attorney, succeeding Mr. Stom. <br /> <br />Council continued for further study or disposition the subject of local business and <br /> <br />occupational license taxation and the report and recommendations submitted in 1955 by <br /> <br />the Special Advisory Tax Study Committee. <br /> <br />Upon recommendation of City Manager Hirst, Council (by a recorded vote which was <br /> <br />unan:iJnous) authorized the placing of orders for two new 1958 police cars and two new <br /> <br />radio units for these cars to replace two 1957 police cars and their radio units, thus <br /> <br />approving the expenditure of funds after July 1, 1958 under accounts "6-A : 614-A" and <br />"6-A : 614-B" as reconunended in the City Manager's 1958-59 proposed budget. <br /> <br />~IH <br />u"" <br />II '" <br />I{~- <br /> <br />By a recorded vote-Coureilman Hill voting against the motion-Council authorized a <br /> <br />preliminary study to be made, by consultants; of Soutlnvestern Virginia Gas Company's <br /> <br />local operations in preparation for Council's consideration of the question of renewing <br />or terminating the gas company's frarehise to expire July 30, 1959. The cost of this <br /> <br />preliminary study was estimated between $1,700.00 and $2,200.00, to be applied against <br />the (estimated) total cost of from $4,500.00 to $5,000.00 for a complete study should <br /> <br />the Coureil desire a complete study to be made. <br /> <br />Upon being advised that Mr. Frank M. Lacy dces not want to be reappointed to the School <br />Board at the expiration of his current term on July 1, 1958, COtulCil went on record as <br /> <br />expressing its appreciation of Mr. Lacy's service and civic contribution as a member <br /> <br />- <br /> <br />of the School Board. Council then unanimously appointed Mr. William F. Frarek to <br />membership on the School Board for a three-year tem expiring July 1, 1961 and also <br /> <br />unanimously reappointed Mr. Charles C. Broun to the Board, also for a three-year term <br /> <br />expiring July 1, 1961. <br />
