Council called for a <br /> <br />special meeting to be held Jure 27, 1957, in the Council ,Chamber, City Hall, at <br /> <br />7:30 P.M., to consider further both the Water Control Board1s ruling and the data <br /> <br />herein presented. <br /> <br />Upon recommendation of Commissiorer of Revenue J. David Morris, by letter dated <br /> <br />June 18, 1957, Council ordered a refund made to w. T. Grant Company of over-payment <br /> <br /> <br />of 1956-57 local business license tax, in accordance l'rith Section 5 of Chapter One <br /> <br />of the City's Business & Occupational License Tax Ordinance. <br /> <br />Upon recommendation of City Manager Hirst, Council adopted the following ordinance <br /> <br />amending the City's Traffic Code (prohibiting what is commonly termed fldrag racing" <br /> <br />of motor vehicles), said ordinance and amendment to become effective at once: <br /> <br />BE IT CRDAINJ<~D by the Council of the City of Martinsvil1e, Virginia, in <br />regular meeting assembled this twenty-fifth day of June, 1957, that the <br />Traffic Code of the City of :Martinsville be and is hereby amended by addi. ng <br />the following: <br />Section 9-177. Same--Racing on streets or highways. <br />Any person who shall engage in a race between two or more motor vehicles <br />on the streets or highways of the city shall be guilty of reckless driving. <br />When any person shall be convicted of reckless driving under this section, <br />then in addition to any other penalties provided by law, the operator IS <br />and/or chauffeur's license of such person shall be suspended by the court <br />or judge for a period of not less than six months nor more than two years. <br />In case of conviction, the court of judge shall order the surrender of the <br />license to the court where it shall be disposed of in accordance with the <br />provisions of Section 9-200 of this Code. <br />An emergency existing, this ordinance shall be in force from time of passage. <br /> <br />No action was taken in connection with the question of naming a new bridge to be <br /> <br />constructed across Smith River on Route 220 South. <br />
