<br />160 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />JUNE 11. 1957 <br /> <br />The regular semi-month1y meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsvil1e, <br /> <br />Virginia, with Mayor John W. Shultz presiding, was held in the Council <br /> <br />Chamber, City Hall, on Tuesday, June 11, 1957, at 7s30 P.M., all members <br /> <br />being present, viz., Mayor and Councilman John W. Shultz; Vice~ayor and <br /> <br />Councilman E. E. Stone; and Councilmen C. C. Donavant, B. H. Hill, and <br /> <br />J. R. Walker. <br /> <br />Atter the invocation, Council approved as read the minutes of its regular <br /> <br />meeting held May 28, 1957. <br /> <br />In accordance with duly-advertised public notices, Council conducted public <br /> <br />hearings on the street-name change petitions and proposals received by Council <br /> <br />on May 14th and May 28th. There being no objections registered, Council <br /> <br />effected the following street-name changes to become effective immediately: <br /> <br />From <br /> <br />To <br /> <br />Standpipe Road <br />Old Danville Road <br />From East Church St. to Spruce St. <br />Old Danville Road <br />From Spruce St. to East Corp. Limits <br /> <br />Bethel Lane <br /> <br />Brookdale Street <br /> <br />Spruce Street <br /> <br />In continuing its consideration of a recent appeal for financial assistance <br /> <br />from the Martinsvil1e-Henry County Life Saving Crew, Council received through <br /> <br />City Attorney Stone a written opinion from Attorney General J. Lindsay Almond, Jr., <br /> <br />regarding the limitations upon local governmental financial aid to organizations <br />such as the Life Saving Crew. In view of these limitations, Council informed <br /> <br />the Life Saving Crew that, although most appreciative of the fine services <br /> <br />being rendered by the group, it could only deny their request. <br /> <br />Complying with repeated requestson the part of and submitted over a considerable <br /> <br />period of time by local movie exhibitors, Council repealed its amusement <br />
