<br />L <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />JULY 10, 1956 <br /> <br />.',...--.... <br /> <br />The regul;,r semi-monthly meetinG of the Council of the City of Martinsville, <br /> <br />VirGinia, with Mayor lL S. Hodnett presiding, was held in ihe Council <br /> <br />Chamber, City Hall, on Tuesday, July 10, 1956, at 7:3oP.r,1., all members <br /> <br />being present, as follows: 1.iayor and CO'mcilman R. S. Hodnett; Vice-Mayor <br /> <br />and Councilman C. P. Craig; and Councilmen B. H. Hill, W. T. Turner, and <br /> <br />J. R. ':falker. <br /> <br />.~..-.-. <br /> <br />After the invocation by City Manager Hirst, Council approved as read the <br /> <br />minutes of its nEeting heM June 26, 1956. <br /> <br />Before beginning its regular order of business Council recognized the presence <br /> <br />of tile Martinsville High School Goverrurent Class and its instructor, NIl'S. <br /> <br />'~"~ <br />,,~~ <br />Ii <br /> <br />Emily Jo Norton, and also the presence of other visitors amoelg whom was a <br /> <br />delegation from Second street. <br /> <br />This delegation, with Joseph H. Pritchett as spokesman, pointed out that a <br /> <br />curb on automobile speeding on th is street is urgently needed and that, while <br /> <br />present Police Department personnel have alvrays been most cooperative in <br /> <br />answerin[': speed complaint calls to that area, the residents of the area feel <br /> <br />that the presence of at least two Negro policemen tllere would be the best <br /> <br />deterrent not only to speeding but also to other violations of the law. The <br /> <br />group also suggested that nSTopn signs be placed on "B" Street at its entrance <br /> <br />to Second Street. Council suggested that citizens confer \~i. th City Manager <br /> <br />Hirst in efforts to work out a solution to the problems. <br /> <br />Upon recommendation of City Attorney Store, Council instructed its Clerk to <br /> <br />request the City Circuit Court Clerk to mark llvacatedn and rlabandonedrl on his <br />
