Dodge, Commanding Officer of Company "B", <br /> <br />116th Infantry, Virginia National Guard, Council ordered the including in the <br /> <br />1956-57 budget of the appropriation of $725.00 for the repair of the roof on <br /> <br />the local Armory building. <br /> <br />A request submitted by the Martinsville Retail Merchants Association, for <br /> <br />,- <br /> <br />"business district" or "downtow district" directional signs on Memorial <br /> <br />Boulevard, was referred to City Manager Mathewson for study and report or <br /> <br />reconnnendations. <br /> <br />With the understanding that Appalachian Electric Power Company has given <br /> <br />or will give its approval, Council agreed to exchange two electric services <br /> <br />~.g <br />'.at:. <br />'<E <br />fi <br /> <br />off Route 58 West now served by the City to Appalachian Electric Power Company <br /> <br />for several services on the northside of the City which normally would be <br /> <br />served by Appalachian but which Appalachian would rather the City serve. <br /> <br />Ci ty Manager Mathewson announced the appointment of Mr. William K. Putney, <br /> <br />of the City School System, as Associate Recreation Director, to assist <br /> <br />Recreation Director J. B. Heldreth who has assumed full duties as Head Coach <br /> <br />(Football) at Martinsville High School. <br /> <br />To fulfill the terms of the City's agreement with the Virginia Department of <br /> <br />Highways in connection with the construction of Memorial Boulevard, Council <br /> <br />was informed that it is necessary that a portion of Lavinder Street near <br /> <br />Memorial Boulevard be closed and abandoned. Council, thereupon, referred this <br /> <br />matter to City Attorney stone for necessary legal action. <br /> <br />Upon recommendation of a special committee of citizens and city officials, <br /> <br />Council placed upon first reading a set of regulations governing the use of <br />
