<br />3~ <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />.JUNE 27. 1 261 <br /> <br />Council acknowledged receipt of a statement of receipts and disbursements <br /> <br />of the office of the Clerk of the City Circuit Court for the calendar year <br /> <br />1960, as released by the State Compensation Board. <br /> <br />Council, in making public certain information on recent conferences and <br /> <br />correspondence with members of the local ministerial group, directed that <br /> <br />Council's letter of June 14, 1961, be incorporated in these minutes, as <br /> <br />follows : <br /> <br />It was the request of your group that the members of the City Council <br />consider the information in the City of Martinsville of an interracial <br />body which would be termed a commission or a committee and which would <br />be appointed and established officially by the City Council. Your <br />committee presented as reason for feeling the need for an interacial <br />committee or commission your stated concern over customer policies <br />you report to be followed by some of the city's business houses which <br />you indicated have occasioned street displays from time to tLrne in <br />recent months. <br /> <br />The members of the Council meeting with you advised that they would give <br />your request fullest consideration and study. Such has been done and <br />this letter is to convey to you in an informal manner, in courtesy to <br />your suggested method of handling, the benefit of our combined individual <br />opinions. <br /> <br />As members of the Council i.,re do not feel it would be advisable for the <br />City Council, as the governing body of Martinsville, to anpoint such an <br />organization for the purposes prJposed. <br /> <br />-- <br /> <br />With your indulgence some cOFments should be made as to the reasoning <br />behind this decision. <br /> <br />We are all mindful of thEl problems occurring in this field the world over. <br />We, as members of the Cit:r's Council, and you, and the members of your <br />corrnnittee, as religious leaders, canrlOt expect, jointly or separately, <br />to resolve all the matters in this field. It therefore falls that, <br />together, '.rre str:tve to do that 1-rhich 1-Te feel is best in our area of <br />responsibility. With that vie~)oint we have approached this matter. <br /> <br />For your having contacted us with this request, we are very appreciative. <br />It was a proper step and it is important that matters which may be felt <br />to relate to public welfare and to publiC interest be given the benefit <br />of study and discussion by and with those associated \.,rith community <br />government. To you as ministers and to your recommendations in this <br />matter, we of the City Council extend our highest respect. It is <br />recognized that you and your committee members represent both yourselves <br />and the congregations committed to your charge. <br />
