Thomas Estate proper~ fronting on Brookdale Street and adjacent to <br /> <br />the east side of the Prillaman & Pace jroperty. <br /> <br />Council endorsed by the following resolution the proposed nerger of the Norfolk & <br /> <br />Western Railway Company and the proposed leasing of Wabash Railroad Company by the <br /> <br />Norfolk & Wes tern Railway Company: <br /> <br />WHEREAS, it has been proposed that The New York, Chicago and st. Louis <br />Railroad Company be merged into the Norfolk and Western Railway Company and <br />that Norfolk and Western Railway Company lease the lines and property of <br />Wabash Railroad Company; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Martins vUle, Virginia, is of the <br />opinion that the proposed merger arrl lease would result in a stronger trans- <br />portation system and inure to the benefit of the citizens of Martinsville by <br />providi~ more efficient and economical transportation designed to meet the <br />expanding needs of the shipping public in this area and the other areas <br />served by the three lines; and <br /> <br />VTHEREAS, applications have been filed with the Interstate C omnerce <br />Commission in Finance Docket Nos. 21510 and 2l5J1, both inclusive, for <br />authori ty to carry out the proposed unification. <br /> <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, by the Council of the City of Martins- <br />ville, Virginia, that it does hereby approve the proposed merger of Norfolk <br />and Western Railway Company and The New York, Chicago and st. Louis Railroad <br />Company and the lease of Wabash Railroad Company by Norfolk am Western <br />Railway Company and reques ts that the Interstate Commerce Commission act <br />favorably on the applications in Finance Docket Nos. 21510 and 21514, both <br />inclusive; and <br /> <br />That its Clerk of Council be and is hereby instructed to send copies of <br />this resolution to the President of the Norfolk and Western Railway Company. <br /> <br />Contingent upon its adoption of a proper resolution defining the normal duties of <br /> <br />the City Attorney, Council expressed the opinion that, irrespective of the provisions <br /> <br />of the City Charter pertaining thereto, normal duties of the Citjr Attorney do not <br /> <br />include or anticipate such legal work as litigation proceedings in which the City <br /> <br />is or becomes involved. <br /> <br />. <br />
