<br />276 <br /> <br />TUESDA Y <br /> <br />FSBRUARY 28. 1961 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Cmmcil of the City of HartinsviIle, <br /> <br />Virginia, vlith Hayor J. Frank 11ilson presiding, '/ms held in the Council Chamber, <br /> <br />City Hall, Tuesday, February 28, 1961, wtll all members being present, viz., <br /> <br />M3.~ror and Councilman J. Frank 'f..!ilson: Vice-Mayor and Councilman Fred T. Renick; <br /> <br />and councilmen Thomas J. Burch, E. E. Stone, and Harry L. Boaz. <br /> <br />After the invocation, Council approved as read the minutes of its re~11ar <br /> <br />meeting held February 16, 1961, and of its special meeting held February 21, <br />1961 . <br /> <br />Several local citizens aPDeared before Council as an indication of their <br /> <br />interest in trle proposed expansion or relocation of the local main United <br /> <br />States Post Office building, as recently announced as being contemplated by <br /> <br />the Post Office Department. A number of petitions l,18re subm5tted on behalf <br /> <br />of many local citizens in opposition to the relocating of the main Post Office <br /> <br />building and, after some discussioh, Council went on record--with Councilman <br /> <br />Burch dissenting on the grounds tllat Council should first obtain more and <br /> <br />definite information from the Federal Government as to its plans-as favoring <br /> <br />the retention of the present site for the City's main Post Office, includir.g <br /> <br />any necessary expansion involving adjoining properties. <br /> <br />City HanarreT Hirst informed Council that no reply has beer. received from <br /> <br />Appalachian POvler Company on the City's recent DUrchase offer mace in connection <br /> <br /> <br />HUh the City's exoressed intention of acquiring Appalachian's electric <br /> <br /> <br />facilities in the area annexed to the City as of January 1, 1960; ",hereupon <br /> <br /> <br />motion, duly seconded and unanimously carr:i_ed, Council directed r'~ayor \"Jilson <br /> <br /> <br />to notify Atmalachian in v!I'i ting of the City's expectancy of ~DPalachian 's <br /> <br /> <br />acceptance or rejection of the offer w:ithin the immediate future. <br /> <br />._._---"--,-~---,,---".__..."_. -'---"-~~-'-'""~-"'~'~-~~-'''''';''-''-''-' <br />
