_72

TUESDAY

JUNE 14. 1960

Council unanimously reappointed Messrs. Henry C. Reed and Thornton G.

Wampler to membership on the City School Board for three-year terms

ending July 1, 1963.

Council continued its consideration of the Manager's proposed City Budget

for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1961, being advised by City Manager

Hirst that on the basis of latest figures submitted by School Superintendent

M. L. Carper only $13,000.00 appears to be available towards balancing the

budget (if Council does not vote the recommended 17-cents tax rate increase)

instead of some $25,000.00 indicated by Mr. Carper as being available, during

Council IS informal conference with the School Board on June 10, 19tD.

Mr. P. S. Ford, of 311 Brown Street, appeared before Council and presented

a prepared statement in which he urged Council to follow his recommendations

wi th respect to traffic-pedestrian safety measures in the Martinsville High

School area, particularly near the Cleveland Avenue-Brown Street intersection,

and more particularly as to the installation of fencing on both sides of

Brown Street west of Cleveland Avenue for a distance of 164 feet to prohibit

school children crossing Brown Street except at a designated point. Council

took this matter under consideration and, meanwhile, directed City Manager

Hirst to prepare a report and recommendation thereon.

Upon request of representatives of the First Baptist Church (Hr. W. R. Broaddus,

Jr., Dr. E. M. McDaniel, and Dr. R. J. Fagg), Council ordered that automobile

parking be allowed--on Sundays only--on the east side of Starling Avenue from

Mllberry Road to the emergency entrance driveway of Martinsville General Hospital.
