<br />l28 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />FEBRUARY 9. 1960 <br /> <br />In connection with an inquiry from Hr'. R. S. Brown, Jr., concerning the <br /> <br />usage and merits of cast-iron pipe vs. cement-asbestos pipe in the <br />installation or construction of water mains in the City, Council received <br />from City Manager Hirst his recommendation that cast-iron pipe be used <br />in most areas in the City's water system. Council mntinued the matter <br />for further consideration. <br /> <br />City Manager Hirst presented Council with a proposed electric power contract <br /> <br />between the Appalachian Power Company and the City of Martinsville, which <br /> <br />would replace the contract expired December 31, 1958 but now operating under <br /> <br />a two-year renewal clause. Council continued this matter pending an analysis <br /> <br />and study by the City's Electric Department. <br /> <br />In response to an inquiry from Hr. W. D. Smith, of Smith vlholesale Company, <br /> <br /> <br />C01IDcil approved the extending of an eight-inch main to be constructed from <br /> <br />Memorial Boulevard to Sellers Street--for which funds were provided in the current <br /> <br /> <br />budget--for a distance on Sellers Street of some 300 feet to a point to serve <br /> <br /> <br />a warehouse or building to be constructed by Smith Wholesale. <br /> <br />Council aknowledged receipt of Police Department reports dealing with the <br />department's activities during the year 1959, Council commending the Police <br />Chief and his departmental personnel upon their fine work. Mayor Shultz, <br />meanwhile, suggested that consideration be given to the purchasing of speed- <br />detection equipment which can be installed on police car spotlights. <br /> <br />Council also akcnolwedged receipt of a report on parking meter operations <br /> <br />over the past several years, as prepared by Irving R. McGhee, Traffic-Planning <br />
