c
,

TUFS DAY

NOVEMBER 10, 1959

The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martins vi lIe,
Virginia, with Mayor John W. Shultz preSiding, was held in the Council Chamber,
City Hall, Tuesday, November 10, 1959, at 6:30 P.M., all members being present,

viz., Mayor and Councilman John W. Shultz; Vice-Mayor and Councilman E. E. Store;

and Councilmen Thomas J. Burch, Clarence C. Donavant, and J. Frank Wilson.

After the invocation, Council approved as read the minutes of its regular

meeting held October 29, 1959.

In accepting the following report and recommendation--dated November 10, 1959-

of the Planning Commission on a petition of the C. Y. Thomas Estate requesting the

rezoning from "A-l Residential" to "B_1 Business" of a parcel of land on the west

side of Brookdale street, Council called for a public hearing to be conducted at

Council's next regular neeting on said rezoning proposal, inClUding the recommended

rezoning of the V. E. Wray lot adjoining the Thomas Estate property:

Your Planning Commission, at its rooeting on September 23, 1959, considered
a petition referred to it by Council. This petition requested the rezoning
of a parcel of land on the west side of Brookdale Street from "A-l Residen-
tial" to "B-1 Busiressll, the petition being submitted by the C. Y. Thomas
Estate.

~-

A public hearing on this petition was held by the Commission on October 6,
1959, after due public notice in the newspaper and proper notification of
citizens in the area.

At the time of the public hearing, no one appeared in opposition to the
petiti.on. After due consideration of this matter it was the unanimous
decision of the Commission that the following recommendations be made to
Council:
1. Too t the petition as submitted be granted and the zoning ordinance be
amended to include not only the property in question but an adjoining
lot owned by Mr. V. E. Wray in the B-1 Busiress District of the City.
2. That a setback of 40 feet, rreasured from the center line of Brookdale
Street existing as of this date, be placed on the property being
rezoned.
The Connnission considered several factors in arriving at this decision.
1. That the property in question was immediately adjacent to the area
presently zoned as B-1 Busiress.
