<br />, '~"'~'~""-~'~--""7'~~~'"'^"'~'-~~".-^~-'-'.",';--'~r-'''- <br /> <br />( <br />'- <br /> <br />THURSDAI <br /> <br />OCTOBER 29. 1959 <br /> <br />The regular semi-monthly meeting of the COlmcil of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, <br />originally scheduled for Tuesday, October 27, 1959 but by due notice and, also, agreement <br />by members of Council, was held ThurSday, October 29, 1959, at 6:30 P.M., in the Council <br />Chamber, City Hall, with Mayor John W. Shultz presiding and with all members being <br />present, viz., Mayor and Councilman John W. Shultz; Vice-Mayor and Councilman E. E. <br /> <br />Stone; and Cormcilmen Thomas J. Burch, Clarence C. Donavant, and J. Frank Wilson. <br /> <br />1-' <br /> <br />After the invocation, Council approved as read the minutes of its regular meeting <br /> <br />held October 13, 1959. <br /> <br />Representatives of the Albert Harris Parent-Teacher Association appeared before <br /> <br />Council and, after presenting and discussing certain traffic conditions which they <br /> <br />described as being hazardous to the safety of the children attending Albert Harris <br /> <br />School, made the following requests: <br /> <br />(1) that Smith Road from Fayette Street to Albert Harris School be widened <br /> <br />and that curb-and-gutter then be constructed thereon, which 'WOuld <br /> <br />necessitate the relocation of sidewalk, noting that some of the owners <br /> <br />of adjacent property would likely not agree to participate in the cost <br /> <br />,- <br /> <br />of curb-a.nd-gutter; <br /> <br />(2) <br /> <br />that a "patrolmother" be employed to supervise and control both pedestrian <br />and vehicular traffic at the intersection of Smith Road with Fayette street; <br />(3) that the "walk-don' t walk" light formerly in operation at Fayette Street <br /> <br />(4) <br /> <br />and Memorial Boulevard be put back into operation; and <br />that consideration be given to the suggestion that a traffic light be <br />installed at the intersection of Beaver Street with Memorial BoUlevard. <br /> <br />,- <br /> <br />Mr. Henry Reed, a member of the City School Board, informed Council that the School Board <br /> <br />is deeply interested in these problems, having discussed them with members of the Albert <br />Harris PTA, and has agreed to share in the cur'b-and-gutter cost along school property. <br />
