<br />-- <br /> <br />-- <br /> <br />,.,..-.... <br /> <br />j <br /> <br />TUESDA Y <br /> <br />MAY 5. 1959 <br /> <br />Council authorized the re-investing (in certificates of deposit) of School Bond <br /> <br />funds for a period of ninety days in an amount anticipated as not being needed <br /> <br />during the period, one-half in the First National Bank and the other half in the <br /> <br />Piedmont Trust Bank, both of Martinsville, Virginia. <br /> <br />Vice-Mayor E. E. Stone expressed his appreciation to various City officials and <br /> <br />personnel for their cooperation and assistance in making English Field suitable <br /> <br />for summer recreation activities. <br /> <br />Throu.gh Mayor John W. Shultz, former Councilman J. R. Walker noted the need for <br /> <br />better anti-noise regulations or more stringent enforcement of anti-noise <br /> <br />regulations already enacted. <br /> <br />Councilman R. S. Brown, Jr., suggested that the City provide in its 1959-60 <br />budget an appropriation of $1,000.00 for the City's membership in the local <br /> <br />Chamber of Commerce now in process of being organized. <br /> <br />Because of a conflict of personal interests with his duties and responsibilities <br /> <br />as a member of Council, Councilman Brown reluctantly submitted his resignation <br /> <br />as a member of Council, effective }~y 15, 1959. Council indicated tlmt it <br /> <br />wanted to withhold acceptance of the resignation, pending further consideration <br /> <br />at its next regular meeting. <br /> <br />Connnissioner of the Revenue J. David Morris asked that Council establish its real <br /> <br />property tax rate; however, upon City l'l'anager Hirst's recommendation, Council indicated <br /> <br />a preference to defer establishing the rate until it can take action on the 1959-60 <br /> <br />budget now in process of being prepared by the ~~nager. <br /> <br />Council was adjourned. <br /> <br />"-" <br /> <br />') ~ <br />(' ':, )''''It..- \;4...
