~42

TUESDAY

AUGUST 24, 1965

Council acknowledged receipt of the following bids for the installation

of 6,689 feet of sewer line (6,566 feet of 8m and 123 feet of 611) in the

Lanier Road area, with Council accepting the lowest bid, as submitted

by Prillaman and Pace:

Hackler-Seymour Metal Works, Inc.
Laramore Construction Company
Prillaman & Pace, Inc.

$45,868.00;
$38,763.00; and
$28,955.00.

Mr. H. E. Thomas, along with his counsel (ltr. Frank I. Richardson,Jr.,

Attorney at law), appealed to Council for relief from--or correction of--

conditions described as hazardous and alledgedly caused by the impounding

of water on Mr. Thomas' land in the area between George Street and Liberty

Street by the construction of Armory Road. City Manager Hirst reported

that, in the construction of Armory Road, which was graded by Lester Lumber

Company (donor of the right-of-way) and for which the City furnished culvert

pipe, Lester Lumber Company had verbally agreed to fill in the area in

question to make for property drainage and to prevent the impounding of

water, but that the method now being used by Lester Lumber Company(viz., by soil

erosion) is quite slow and is not that originally contemplated. Council referred

this matter to Mr. Hirst and v~. Brown who indicated that they would attempt--

as they have in the past--to work out a solution of this problem with Lester

Lumber Company.

Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously adopted, Council accepted a perpetual

easement from the Virginia National Bank covering an area of fifteen square

feet at the corner of Lester and Church Streets to provide for a realignment

of this corner in relation thereof with the proposed widening of Ellsworth

Street for an improvement in the flow of traffic at this intersection.
