~26

TUESDAY
--

JUL Y 1 3. 1 965

WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, has
received an inquiry from an authorized representative of the United
States Post Office Department as to whether the City of Martinsville
would sell to the United States Post Office Department a portion of
that tract of land acquired by the City of Martinsville from the
J. R. Smith Estate and fronting on the south side of West Church
Street, in Martinsville, Virginia; and

WHEREAS, the acquisition by the City of Martinsville of several
tracts of land--including the J. R. Smith Estate property--in this
area has been and is for the purpose of constructing new municipal
facili ties; and

WHEREAS, the constructing by the United States Post Office, or by
its agent, of new post office facilities within the same block of
West Church Street and adjoining City-owned property, in conjunction
with the City's purpose, would enhance the general area and would be
mutually beneficial; therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia,
in regular meeting assembled this thirteenth day of July, 1965, that
the Honorable J. Frank Wilson, Mayor of the City of Martinsville, be
and is hereby authorized to execute (on behalf of the City of
Martinsville) an option to sell to the United States Post Office
Department, for the sum of forty thousand dollars ($40,000.00), a
portion--more specifically described in aforesaid option--of the land
acquired by the City of Martinsville from the J. R. Smith Estate,
which portion would have a frontage of forty (40) feet on the south
side of West Church Street, between a proposed new east line of
City-owned property and the west boundary of property owned by Mrs.
Mary L. 'Semple; and would extend south for a dis tance of approximately
three hundred and twenty (320) feet to a projection of the rear (or
south) line of a lot owned by Richardson Motor Company, Inc.; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED by said Council that said option shall expire
at the end of three hundred (300) days from date of option and shall
be an assignable option only to the extent that improvements shall
be constructed on the land described in said option, as well as on
adjoining land to the east and on land adjoining the present post
office tract, for new post office facilities only.

Council acknowledged with appreciation a report of the activities of the

Martinsville Memorial Public Library for the fiscal year ended June 30, 1965,

and also for the month of June, 1965, reflecting considerable growth in

usage of the library during the year.
