37

TUESDA Y

MARCH 9, 19M

owned by petitioner and located west of Rives Road Extension near the City's

south cor:oorate limits. The Commission further recommended that "every

effort should be made to secure an additional vehicular access into the area

being recommended for rezoning" and that such additional access as might be

secured should be made available to vehicles traveling Rives Hoad Extended

in order to improve industrial access to the entire area. Attorney William

F. Stone presented information to the Council indicating that State Highway

o.'-I~
Department industrial access funds, in the amount of $150,000, .~'available

towards the estimated cost of $215,000 of constructing an industrial access

road, coupled with an overpass across the Norfolk & Western Hailway and with

a bridge across 'Smith River leading into Route 220 South. The difference of

$65,000.00, Council was informed, would have to come from local and other

sources. Council concurred in the need for this construction and suggested

conferring with the Henry County Board of Supervisors in an effort to obtain

financial assistance from Henry County toward this project, inasmuch as the

proposed overpass and bridge, as well as portion of the access road, would

be outside the City's corporate limits. Meanwhile, Council called for a duly-

advertised public hearing to be conducted on the recommended rezoning at

Council's forthcoming April 13th meeting.

Noting th"d the term of Mr. 'S. 5. Flythe as a member of the Virginia Highway

Commission will expire June 30, 1965, Council went on record as endorsing Mr.

Earl Fitzpatrick, of Roanoke, Virginia, as Successor to Mr. Flythe.

-

In acknowledging receipt of the 1964 Annual Report of the Martinsville

Volunteer Fire Company and the presence of a number of the members of this

company (jncluding Mr. J. D. Spencer, immediate past president and Mr. Ben C.

Winn, president for 1965), the Council expressed its sincere appreciation of

the continued outstanding service rendered the citizens of Martinsville by

this organization.
