TUESDAY

JANUARY 12, 1965

Council commended the City's Police, Traffic, and Fire Departments for their

1964 records in traffic and fire safety, noting that no traffic fatalities

occulTed in the City during the past two years until the last \-reek in

December of 1964; and that fire summons have been on a steady decline

over the past ten years except for the year 1963 when, during a long period

of dry weather, there were many brush and grass fires requiring attention.

City Manager Hirst informed Council that, excluding the City's construction

work in progress, major construction work in progress in the City--according

to building permit valuations--exceeds $4,500,000.00, reflecting continued

expansion of commercial and industrial business activities.

Council was informed that the owners of the Sparrow property, on the south

side of East Church Street between the former First Baptist Church property

and the former O. D. Ford property, have refused to donate right-of-way in

front of their property to permit the widening of this side of East Church

Street between Broad and Ellsworth Streets according to plans, although

other owners of property within the block on this side of the street have

donated right-of-way or have agreed to donate right-of-way. Upon being

further informed that the City already owns sufficient right-of-way to

permit the proposed widening, Council agreed that widening should proceed

although right-of-way along the Sparrow property will not permit the planned

13'-sidewalk but only a three-foot sidewalk. Council learned, too, that the

owners of Sidney's, a new store under construction within the block, have

requested the use of brick for the sidewalk in front of this store; however,

Council indicated that the usual concrete sidewalk would be constructed.
