<br />68 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />JUNE 9. 1964 <br /> <br />City of Martinsville and for the Penalties for the Violation Thereof" be <br />and is hereby amended to include the following revised electric tariffs: <br />(see inserted pages) <br /> <br />BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED that these revised electric tariffs shall be <br />applicable to the City's electric charges and bills rendered on and <br />after June 20, 1964. <br /> <br />Pending receipt of recommendations from Wiley & Wilson, Consulting Engineers, <br /> <br />on bids received by the City on June 2nd for the construction of the Smith <br /> <br />River Interceptor and Mulberry Creek Interceptor sewer lines, or portions <br /> <br />thereof, Council deferred action on said bids but, by motion, directed that <br /> <br />this matter be placed on the agenda for the forthcoming June 16th special <br /> <br />meeting. <br /> <br />Attorney J. English Ford and Attorney John D. Epperly appeared before Council <br /> <br />and cited provisions of the State statutes which limit the non-taxable land <br /> <br />holdings of churches in cities and towns to not more than four acres, unless <br /> <br />by ordinance the local governing authorities choose to permit such holdings <br /> <br />up to ten acres under the present provisions and up to twenty acreS after <br /> <br />July 1, 1964, under permissive legislation enacted by the 1964 General Assembly. <br /> <br />Inasmuch as the land holdings of several local churches may already be close to <br /> <br />four acres and might of necessity increase to in exceSS of four acres, Council <br /> <br />adopted the following ordinance permitting local churches to possess up to ten <br /> <br />acres of non-taxable land: <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in <br />regular meeting assembled this ninth day of June, 1964, pursuant to <br />authority granted by Section 57-12 of the CODE OF VIRGINIA, 1950, and as <br />amended, that trustees of any church diocese, congr~gation, or church or <br />religious denomination, or society or branch or division thereof, may take <br />and/or hold in the City of Martinsville not more than ten (10) acres of <br />land at anyone time, if such land or acreage is to be devoted exclusively <br />and is subsequently so devoted to church buildings, chapels, and offices <br />used exclusively for the administrative purposes of such church; 'Sunday- <br />
