<br />34 <br /> <br />THURSDAY <br /> <br />SEPI'EMB~ 26~ 1963 <br /> <br />Brief comments were offered by City officials on the recent annual convention <br /> <br />of the Virginia Municipal League attended ~ these officials, with some emphasis <br /> <br />on the importance of representation on the league's executive committee frcm <br /> <br />Martinsvi1le, preferably by City Manager Hirst, who has long been active in <br /> <br />League matters and has made outstanding contributions to the Virginia cities <br /> <br />through the league. <br /> <br />Council acknowledged receipt--and referred to the Planning Commission for its <br /> <br />consideration and recommendations--of the following rezoning petitions: <br /> <br />(1) By MOorefield's Cleaners & Laundry, Inc., requesting the rezoning <br />from residential to business a lot owned by Moorefield's and <br />located on Cross Street to the rear of the existing laundry off <br />Memorial Boulevard; <br /> <br />(2) By Lester lumber Company, Inc., requesting a rezoning to "B-1 <br />Business" of residential property located on the southeast corner <br />of the intersection of Northside Drive with Clearview Drive; and <br /> <br />t3) By John A. Jamison and B. G. Frith (through their counsel, Attorney <br />Douglas K. Frith), requesting the rezoning from "A-2 Residential" <br />to "B-1 Business" that portion (not already so zoned) of a lot <br />located on the west side of Route 108 (Figsboro Road), on which a <br />variance has already been granted by the Board of Zoning Appeals <br />and on which the petitioners expect to operate a "drive-in" <br />restaurant. <br /> <br />City Manager Hirst reported that, because of expansion by panni1l Knitting <br /> <br />Company of its manufacturing facilities on the west side of Cleveland Avenue, <br /> <br />it is necessary that the City construct a .36" storm-drain under Cleveland <br /> <br />Avenue, for a distance of eighty feet, with a depth of from 1.3 feet to 26 <br /> <br />feet; and, because of the scope or nature of this project, it has been <br /> <br />determined that this work can best be done by an independent contr(;!.ctor. <br /> <br />With this in mind, City Manager Hirst further reported, bids have been invited <br /> <br />and the following three received: <br />
