<br />_74 <br /> <br />lUES DAY <br /> <br />ALTGU'ST 13. 1963 <br /> <br />Attorney William F. Stone, representing the Southern Railway System, appeared before <br /> <br />Council to enlist Council's support of the Southern Railway 5ystem's position with <br /> <br />respect to the transportation of grain into the Southeast in multiple-car shipments, <br /> <br />explaining that upon Southern's application the Interstate Commerce Commission had <br /> <br />approved a 16%-reduction in applicable tariff but later had rescinded its order of <br /> <br />approval. Upon motion, duly seconded, Council unanimously adopted the following <br /> <br />resolution in support of Southern1s position: <br /> <br />BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in <br />regular meeting assembled this thirteenth day of August, 1963, that 1. W. <br />Cubine, City Attorney of the City of Martinsville, be and is hereby <br />authorized and directed to perform any and all acts whi~h in his judgment <br />may be necessary or desirable to insure that the views of the Council of <br />the City of Martinsville, V~Lrginia, on behalf of the City of Martinsville-- <br />supporting the position of the Southern Railway System with respect to the <br />transportation of grain into the Southeast in multiple-car shipments, in <br />accordance with tariffs now on file 'with the Interstate Commerce <br />Commission-.-are presented to the LTni ted States District Court at <br />Cincinnati, Ohio, and to any other court which may take jurisdiction in <br />a similar case, or on any appeal. <br /> <br />A petition submitted by Mr. J. C. Aaron, requesting the rezoning to "B-2 Industrial" <br /> <br />of a tract of land lying on the south side of the Norfolk & Western Railway Company's <br /> <br />right-of-way in the Doe Run Creek area, was referred to the Planning Commission for <br /> <br />its consideration ffild recommendation. <br /> <br />Council continued for study a requ~:;lt submitted by Mrs. Florinne A. Campbell and <br /> <br />Mrs. Odessa Ramsey asking that the City authorize or permit an extension of the <br /> <br />City's water main on Grandview Road and Edgewood Place to serve these areaS not <br /> <br />presently being served by the City. <br /> <br />In appraising the status of the City's current se'vr rage system improvement program, <br /> <br />Council suggested that the progr~Dll be accelerated, particularly as to alleviating <br /> <br />serious conditions in certain a~eas. <br />
