<br />164 <br /> <br />I.UESDAY <br /> <br />JULY 9. 1963 <br /> <br />Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council approved--for <br /> <br /> <br />execution by Mayor Wilson on behalf of the City--two agreements with the Norfolk <br /> <br /> <br />& Western Railway Company, providing for the crossing of N&W right-of-way by sewer <br /> <br /> <br />lines in two separate locations. <br /> <br />In response to an inquiry from local tobacco warehousemen, Council agreed to extend <br /> <br />courtesy parking privileges to tobacco farmers through the 1963 tobacco marketing <br /> <br />season, in the manner as heretofore granted. <br /> <br />By letter dated July 9, 1963, accompanied by maps, the American Furniture Company, <br /> <br /> <br />Inc., (through its Secretary-Treasurer, Mr. J. F. Hankins), requested the rezoning <br /> <br /> <br />of its property located south of Aaron Street and east of Broad Street from its <br /> <br />present "A-2 Residential" and "B-1 Business" to "B-2 Industrial". Council referred <br /> <br />this petition to the Planning Commission for its consideration and recommendation. <br /> <br />City Manager Hirst, in connection J.,J:i.th an appraisal of the City's growth in recent <br /> <br />years, presented to Council a summary of the number of utility customers at the <br /> <br />present time, compared with the number some two years ago, concluding that the rate <br /> <br />of growth has been approximately four per cent (4%) per year during each of the <br /> <br />last two years. <br /> <br />In referring to a recent conference between the Council and representatives of the <br /> <br />Martinsville-Henry County Christian Civic League, Council agreed to offer to meet <br /> <br />with these representatives on any mutually-satisfactory date in the very near future <br /> <br />to continue the discussion of problems of mutual concern. <br /> <br />Council was adjourned. <br /> <br />w. ~.~~Cl;;'k-;'f <br /> <br />Council <br /> <br />.
