<br />By letter dated May 9, 1963, Major General Paul M. Booth, Adjutant General of the
<br />
<br />Virginia National Guard, informed Council that he has authorized the inviting of
<br />
<br />bids--for opening June 7, 1963--for the construction of a new armory for
<br />
<br />Martinsville.
<br />
<br />In response to an inquiry from the Resident Engineer's office of the State Highway
<br />
<br />Department, Council indicated that it will meet with representatives of the
<br />
<br />Highway Department on May 28th to discuss the possibility of providing additional
<br />
<br />streets and highways in the southeast area of the City &~d to the east and south of
<br />
<br />the City.
<br />
<br />Upon being advised that curb-and-gutter construction scheduled for First Street
<br />
<br />must be deferred because of lack of necessary participation, Council unanimously
<br />
<br />authorized the construction of curb-and-gutter on Maxine Road and Carver Court
<br />
<br />and established priority therefor, if required participation by the property owners
<br />
<br />is assured.
<br />
<br />City Manager Hirst announced the retirement on April 30, 1963, of Jake Weine (Jakab
<br />
<br />Vajand) , who came to the United States from Hungary in 1914 and who was employed
<br />by the City's Public Works Department in 1951. In acknowledging this announcement,
<br />Council expressed its appreciation to Mr. Weine for his faithful and efficient
<br />
<br />service while an employee of the City.
<br />
<br />City Manager Hirst also announced the appointment of Mrs. Elizabeth T. Long as
<br />
<br />librarian of Martinsville Public Library.
