10

TUESDAY

JANUARY 8, 1963

",-

Council acknowledged receipt of a petition--for future consideration--submitted

by residents of Highland Ridge Avenue, requesting the construction of curb-and-gutter

(on a shared-cost basis) by the City on this street.

Subject to City Attorney Cubine's approval as to phraseology and legality, Council

approved an easement agreement permitting the Southwestern Virginia Gas Company to

cross City-owned property on the south side of Smith River with a gas transmission

line to serve customers which might locate in the City's Industrial Park. The

property in question was described as that purchased (in January, 1960) from Mr.

O. B. Hedgecock for a sewage disposal plant site. The Southwestern Virginia Gas

Company stipulated and agreed that, upon notice by the City or a subsequent owner

of the property, it would remove any gas lines constructed across the property.

Upon recommendation of City Manager Hirst, Council authorized the constructing of

additional transformer-bank capacity in the City's electric substations, at an

estimated cost of $60,000-$70,000 for which funds are available, to meet present

and anticipated demands upon the City's electric system.

-

Mr. J. L. Adams, manager of the local H. L. Green Company store at the corner of

Main and Franklin Streets, renewed his complaint (of December 21, 1962) pertaining

to the condition of pedestrian signal lights at the corner of Main and Walnut

Streets and at the corner of Main and Franklin Streets.

-

Mr. William B. Muse, and others, appeared before Council and (1) inquired as to the

cause of electric power interruption, which occurred in December, 1962, and (2)

suggested that a traffic signal be installed at the intersection of Beaver Street
and Memorial Boulevard North.

Council was adjourned.

.-.".t1\..-.,--.J

"f Cnuncil
