04

TUESDAY

JANUARY 8. 1963

the other three sides by "B-2 Industrial" zoning, or that property "bounded by

the former Rieves Street on the east, Sale Knitting Millon the south, and by

Franklin and Dillard Streets on the westrr. Council accepted the recommendation

of the Commission and directed that a duly-advertised public hearing on this

matter be conducted by Council at its regular meeting scheduled for February

12, 1963.

The Planning Commission also reported that a petition recently filed by Dr.

D. O. Baldwin and Mr. S. H. Baldwin--requesting the rezoning of certain of their

property adjacent to the west corporate limits--has been withdrawn.

By letter dated January 8, 1963, concurring in Vice-Mayor Renick's recommendation

of December 11, 1962, Mayor Wilson urged that a comprehensive capital improvements

program be formulated and undertaken, with the advice and assistance of not only

City personnel and the Planning Commission but also of all interested citizens,

pointing out that the growth and industrial expansion of the community necessitate

major improvements on the part of the City's government to keep pace.

Mr. Joe Pritchett and a delegation appeared before Council and requested that the

City provide additional police protection and law enforcement personnel for

especially the business areas in the "West End" section of the City, citing the

increase of violence in the area and suggesting that "foot patrolmen" would best

answer the need. Council, in expressing its understanding of the problem--not

necessarily prevalent in just one area--and in soliciting the help and advice of

interested citizens, indicated that it will give consideration to this matter.
