j',
"'" ..J:,;

TUESDAY

MAY 27, 1969

,-

The regular semi-monthly meeting of the Council of the City of Martinsville,

Virginia, with Mayor F. T. Renick, M.D., Mayor, presiding, was held Tuesday,

May 27, 1969, in the Council Chamber, City Hall, beginning at 7:30 P.M.,

the following members being present: Mayor F. T. Renick, M.D.; Harry L.

Boaz; and William D. Hobson.

After the invocation, Council approved as recorded the minutes of its regular

meeting held May 13, 1969.

In connection with petition filed April 8, 1969, by residents of liD" Street,

requesting the closing of that portion of said street between Fourth Street

and Roundabout Road, the Planning Commission (by report dated May 21, 1969)

recommended granting petitioners' request, subject to reservation by the

City of utility easements in and along said street portion. In tentative

acceptance of the Commission's report, Council authorized Mayor Renick to

appoint a Board of Viewers to perform the duties required by Section 15.1-364

of the CODE OF VIRGINIA (1950, and as amended), for further consideration

of said petition.

Upon being informed that, in the course of the current Federal Tax Structure

Study, some efforts are being exerted toward removing the tax-exemption

status on state, municipal and county bonds which, if so removed, would

adversely affect local budgets and would increase the tax burden on local

citizens, Council unanimously went on record as strongly opposing any such

legislation as well as efforts in this direction, meanwhile instructing its

Clerk to so record this opposition with the Honorable Wilbur D. Mills,

Chairman, Ways & Means Committee of the United States House of Representatives,

and with other appropriate officials and representatives.
