:iG

THURSDAY

SEPTEMBER 26, 1968

suggested his firm be given a "free" sewer connection, valued at $125.00.

This being contrary to City policy, Council directed that the Calaman firm

be paid the sum of $125.00 as compensation for construction inconvenience

and that the Calaman firm--if it desires a sewer connection--pay to the City

the sewer connection fee of $125.00. Upon being connected, it was understood

that the Calaman firm would pay the prevailing (or applicable) sewer service

charge.

Mayor Renick, noting along with members of Council (all of whom attended

the 1968 Virginia Municipal League convention in Roanoke, Virginia, September

22nd-23rd-24th) that the 1968 League Convention went on record as endorsing

the proposed Virginia bond issue of $81,000,000.00 for new and additional

facilities for higher education and mental health needs, inquired of members

of Council as to whether the Council wishes to go on record as endorsing said

bond issue proposal; whereupon, after some discussion, Council continued the

matter to its next regular meeting.

Dr. Dana B. Hamel, Director of the Virginia Community College System, (by

letter dated September 18th), informed Council that both Danville Technical

Institute and the Danville branch of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute are

now combined as an area unit of the Virginia Community College System, as a

result of which there is required the formation of a "Local Advisory Board"

whose membership shall be residents of the region served by the community

college, possibly with a representative from each political subdivision in

the area; however, it was noted that no member of the Board may be, at the same time,

a member of the Virginia General Assembly or of any local governing body.

The method of appointing such an Advisory Board, as outlined by Dr. Hamel,

first begins with the appointing of aD Ad Hoc Nominating Committee, consisting

of one member of each local governing body, which Committee shall recommend--
for appointment by the State Board of Community Colleges-_one candidate for
