3~

TUESDAY

SEPTEMBER 10. 1968

Upon being informed by City Manager Noland (as per memorandum dated September
5, 1968) that, coupled with the closing of East Martinsville Elementary School
and Albert Harris High School and with the opening of the new Martinsville

Senior High School on Northside Drive, City Transit Company is unable--with

its present transportation equipment leased from the City--to meet the increased

demand from school students for bus service; and, further, it is not deemed

advisable to attempt to operate present or additional busses for student

transportation under the State Department of Education. City Manager Noland,

further, informed Council that two 54-passenger busses--which will meet the

requirements of the State Department of Education in the event State assistance

funds might become of importance--are immediately available; whereupon, after

discussing this matter with School Superintendent John Richmond and with Mr.

John Holmes, of the City Transit Company, with Mr. Holmes expressing preference

for the 54-passenger busses as opposed to other busses of larger capacity and

with both Mr. Richmond and Mr. Holmes indicating that for the current year--but

with no commitment as to needs and demands beyond the current year--the adding

of two 54-passenger busses should enable City Transit Company to meet bus

service demands, Council authorized the immediate purchase of two 54-passenger

busses, for use by City Transit Company under its lease agreement with the

City, cost of which to be financed from the surplus carried over at June 30th

resulting from the sale of property on Ellsworth Street to Piedmont Consumer

Corporation.

As a result of the forthcoming conflict in meeting date between Council's

September 24th scheduled meeting and the annual meeting of the Virginia Municipal

League in Roanoke, Virginia, on September 22nd-23rd-24th, Council rescheduled

its next meeting (from September 24th) to Thursday, September 26th, at 7:30 P.M.
