:~ ') ~

TUESDAY

AUGUST 13. 1968

the citizens of Martinsville and Henry County in such a project, I would
like to suggest that Council appoint a committee to study the possibility
and render a report and recommendations at an early date. I further
suggest that the committee be made up of representatives from City Council,
School Board, Recreation Department, Patrick Henry College, United Fund,
Chamber of Commerce, Martinsville Library, Henry County Historical Society,
Archaeological Society of Virginia, the public at large, and of other
organizations who may have an interest in the collection, preservation,
interpretation, and display of the surviving relics of our cultural heritage
and of our environment.

Members of the City School Board, as well as School Superintendent John D. Richmond,

indicated that the East Martinsville Elementary School would not be operated for
rl~
school purposes during the forthcoming school year but could~predict its need or

lack of need beyond the forthcoming year as well as the future usage of the

four-room West End Primary School. School officials, meanwhile, informed Council

that usage of the East Martinsville Elementary School has been offered to the

Recreation Department, to which some study is being given as to its feasibility

for such usage. After some discussion, including the suggestions that such a

museum as proposed--if housing facilities were available--would appropriately be

located as an adjunct to the City's Public Library or in the City's park on East

Church Street Extended, Council accepted Mr. Gravely's suggestion that a special

study committee be appointed for the purposes set forth in Mr. Gravelyls prepared

statement.

There being no objections registered, Council adopted the following ordinance

effecting certain revisions in the City's Building & Plumbing Codes, as placed

on first reading July 23, 1968:

WHEREAS, by a report submitted through the City Manager of the City of
M8rtinsville to Martinsville City Council on July 23, 1968, a duly-
constituted Special Advisory Committee recommended that certain changes,
deletions, and/or additions fully set out by said Committee should be
reflected and/or incorporated in the Building Code of the Cityof
Martinsville; and

WHEREAS, after due consideration, the Council of the City of Martinsville
accepted the recommendations of said Special Advisory Committee; now,
therefore,
