Morris (the owner of one of the adjoining tracts) has been under the <br /> <br />impression that the City would vacate and abandon the old portion of Salem Street, <br /> <br />with the City initiating the appropriate proceedings; whereupon, Co~ncil referred <br /> <br />this matter to the Planning Commission for its consideration and recommendation. <br /> <br />Pursuant to Section 15-1.835 and/or 15-1.912 of the CODE OF VIRGINIA (1950, and as <br /> <br />amended), Council directed City Attorney cubine to prepare the necessary documents <br /> <br />and notice of public hearing to enable the Council to request the forthcoming 1968 <br /> <br />Virginia General Assembly (through the City's representatives thereto and members <br /> <br />thereof) to amend the City Charter through the granting of the following permissive <br /> <br />powers: <br /> <br />(a) Amend Section 6 of Chapter 2 of the Charter by increasing the maximum <br /> <br />annual compensation allowed members of Council from $600.00 per year <br /> <br />to $2,400.00 per year; and <br />(b) Add a section to the Charter to permit Council the power to establish <br /> <br />a "Parking Authority" . <br /> <br />Upon recommendation of City Manager Noland, Council declared the afternoon of <br /> <br />Friday, December 22, 1967, a half-day holiday for City employees, provided the <br /> <br />required and usual protective and service functions be maintained. <br /> <br />Mr. Robert N. Crockett, of 1007 Mountain Road, appeared before Council and declared <br /> <br />his opposition to any proposed State legislation which would make more easily available <br /> <br />the purchase and/or usage of alcoholic beverages. <br /> <br />Council was adjourned. <br /> <br />'w. <br /> <br /> <br />an, Clerk of Council <br />
