91

THURSDAY

SEPTEMBER 1, 1966

The following two bids were received for furnishing jail cells or equipment,

-

not included in foregoing invitation to bidders and their bids:

Southern Prison
Roanoke Iron & Bridge

$ 38,470.00
30,500.00

Mr. J. Coates Carter, of the firm J. Coates Carter, Architect, was present

and advised the Council as to certain matters involving the project and the

bids received, noting that the "Alternate #1" bid by Stanley W. Bowles

-

Construction Company was not only the lowest of the alternate bids but also

is within the $900,000 bond issue authorized by special election held February

8, 1966. Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council accepted

the lowest ItAlternate #111 bid of $896,243.00 as submitted by the Bowles firm,

indicating that within the near future Council will consider ways and means

to finanCe costs of the total project in excess of the bonds authorized.

Council also unanimously agreed to consider and/or act upon the matter

involving repeated attempts to acquire certain right-of-way from the Sparrow

Estate along the south side of East Church Street, for the purpose of

constructing a sidewalk along the front of this property that would conform with

sidewalk constructed adjacent thereto. Upon being informed that the Sparrow

Estate remains unwilling to donate this right-of-way but will accept the sum

of $1,500.00 therefor, and upon being informed of the appraised valuation of

the property (both total and pro-rated to the portion required), Council

unanimously authorized the payment of the sum of $1,500.00 for the right-of-way

upon presentation of executed deed approved by City Attorney Cubine.

;"

Council was adjourned.

('.-J~ '- '1\-<.... v~~_-
W.
