<br />58 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />MAY 24, 1966 <br /> <br />Corporate Commission which, if approved, will reduce local natural gas <br /> <br />consumers' bills or charges by an average of 5.2%, effective after forthcoming <br /> <br />June meter readings. <br /> <br />Pursuant to Section 15.1-364 of the CODE OF VIRGINIA (1950, and as amended), <br /> <br />Mr. C. Grady Monday, of Joyce & Stone, Attorneys at Law, on behalf of Mr. <br /> <br />Roy C. stone, filed a petition requesting the vacating and abandonment of a <br /> <br />portion of Burl Street, as described in said petition as follows: <br /> <br />IlBeing a portion of that certain street known as Burl Street <br />lying in the Northwest section of the City of Martinsville, <br />Virginia as evidenced by the tax map of the City's <br />Commissioner of Revenue, and the map of the City located <br />in the Office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court of the City <br />of Martinsville, said Street's East end intersects with the <br />Western boundary line of Massey Street, and the West end <br />intersects with the eastern boundary line of Fayette Street, <br />and being that portion of Burl Street abutting on the rear <br />property line of Martinsville Retreading Service, Inc. and <br />Richardson-Wyatt Buick Corp. II <br /> <br />Under authority granted by Council, MayorWilson(subsequently) appointed <br /> <br />Messrs. J. E. Jones (Chairman), T. J. Childress, Jr., and R. A. Henderson, <br /> <br />Jr. as a Board of Viewers to act and perform the duties of such a board <br /> <br />as set forth in said code section. <br /> <br />Mr. John D. Epperly, Attorney at Law (of Broaddus, Epperly & Broaddus, <br /> <br />Attorneys at Law), appeared before Council on behalf of the local Retail <br /> <br />Merchants Association and its members, requesting the abolition of the <br /> <br />City's gross receipts license tax on local retail merchants, effective <br /> <br />with the license tax year beginning May 1, 1967. After presenting reasons <br /> <br />supporting this petition, Mr. Epperly called on Messrs. Leon Globman, <br /> <br />Joseph W. Howell, and Frank L. Taylor, respectively representing the <br /> <br />department stores, the automobile dealers, and the grocers, who cited <br /> <br />conditions peculiar to their respective operations. Council took the <br /> <br />petition under advisement for study. <br />
