<br />2 <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />JANUARY 11,1966 <br /> <br />City Manager Noland reported that the City's Municipal Airport--under lease <br /> <br />to Martinsville-Henry County Airport Development Corporation until December <br /> <br />31, 1965--was officially closed on December 31, 1965 with appropriate notice <br /> <br />to aviation authorities. Mr. Noland also reported that the Blue Ridge Airport <br /> <br />Authority desires possession of the runway lighting system and two doors <br /> <br />remaining on the tee-hangar constructed by the Airport Development Corporation. <br /> <br />Council unanimously voted approval of the Authority's request. <br /> <br />In connection with the "municipal facility" bond ordinance introduced and <br /> <br />placed on first reading December 14, 1965, and upon City Attorney Cubine's <br /> <br />advice, Council unanimously directed that a special meeting of the Council be <br /> <br /> <br />held Thursday, January 13, 1966, in the Council Chamber, City Hall, at 8:45 <br /> <br /> <br />A.M., for the purpose of further considering and/or acting upon said ordinance. <br /> <br />Mayor Wilson reported that Mr. W. D. Hartford, retired Manager of the local <br /> <br /> <br />du Pont plant, has accepted the chairmanship of a special "Citizen's <br /> <br />Committee II in preparation for the forthcoming February 8th bond referendum. <br /> <br />Council then indicated that the proposed bond issue, if approved, would be <br /> <br />payable over a period not to exceed twenty years, meanwhile releasing its <br /> <br />letter of unanimous endorsement of the project and urging approval by the <br /> <br />voters of the proposal. <br /> <br />Public Works Director George W. Brown informed Council of the status of the <br /> <br /> <br />City's application for a Federal grant (of $157,000.00) toward the portion <br /> <br /> <br />of the Smith River Interceptor phase of the City's sewerage system improvement <br /> <br />program and, also, reported on recent conferences with local du Pont plant <br /> <br />officials involving consideration of a new industrial access road from the <br /> <br />plant or a new highway connecting Route 220 South and Route 57 West, <br />
