'3 J
'- t

TUESDAY

JUNE 13, 1972

of assistance, but also would be self-defeating and unrealistic. Mr. James H.

Ford, Attorney at Law and a member of the Planning Commission, though speaking

as a private citizen and referring to his recent prior appearance before Council,

expressed the opinion that the proposed amendments would promote new and better

housing. Mr. Ford also reviewed the Commission's deliberations on the proposed

amendments, wherein the Commission had initially considered recommending a "floor"

or restriction of four units. Mr. Joseph W. Pritchett expressed an opinion similar

to that of Mr. William B. Muse. Upon motion, duly seconded, with Councilman Hobson

voting against the motion and Messrs. Renick, West, and Boaz voting affirmatively,

Council adopted the following ordinance effecting the Commission's recommendation

and amending the City's Zoning Ordinance, as follows:

BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in
regular meeting assembled this thirteenth day of June, 1972, that following
sections and/or subsections and/or paragraphs of the Zoning Ordinance of
the City of Martinsville be--and are hereby--amended, as follows:

SECTION III. GENERAL PROVISIONS.
At end of paragraph "B-1" add:
No residential structure designed to accommodate more than
eight family residential housekeeping units shall be erected,
or created by alteration of existing structures, except
pursuant to the special use provisions of Section VIII.

SECTION VIII. REGULATIONS FOR SPECIAL TYPES OF USES.
To paragraph "C", as "Part 8", add:
8. Apartments. Residential structures or apartment buildings
designed to accommodate over eight family housekeeping units to
be erected or result from alteration of existing structures on
any lot. The petition shall conform with the requirements of
Section VIII, paragraph C, I-a.

Upon motion, duly seconded and unanimously carried, Council reappointed Mr. W. K.

Putney and Dr. William D. Lewis--to succeed themselves--to membership on the City

School Board for three-year terms beginning July 1, 1972.
