nq

.-' ...j

TUESDAY

MARCH 14, 1972

appraisal procedure in lieu of the quadrennial reassessment procedure heretofore

followed. Mr. Hanel informed Council that, if the responsibility and personnel

(one full-time appraisor) were placed under his jurisdiction and supervision, the

Commonwealth of Virginia would share in the cost thereof, thus making for no more

cost to the City than the most recent quadrennial reassessment cost. In addition,

property values would be maintained on a current basis, with the result--if

appreciation continues as in the past--the City would realize the benefits annually.

Meanwhile, Council recommended that Mr. Hanel confer with the members of the last

Equalization Board and invite them to express their opinions on the proposal at

Council's forthcoming March 28th meeting.

Council referred to the PJanning Commission, for its consideration and recommendation,

a request filed by Mr. A. L. Burch (Burch Oil Company) for water service and

connection at or near the intersection of Douglas Road and Route 57 East, outside

the City's corporate limits. Council was informed that, reportedly, residential

property owners in the vicinity will oppose petitioner's request if water service

is intended for other than residential purposes.

Council also referred to the Planning Commission, for its consideration and

recommendation, a petition filed by Mr. G. N. DeShazo, requesting the rezoning

of his propenty at 112 Starling Avenue to "P-2 Professional".

In taking note of Mayor Renick's recent decision to terminate his public service

as a member of Council and as Mayor at the conclusion of his present term, which

expires August 31, 1972, other members of Council concurred in Vice-Mayor West's

commendation of Mayor Renick for his outstanding leadership, sound judgment and

wise counsel during his nearly twelve years as a member of Council, the last six

of which he has served as Mayor.
