<br />, I (' <br />j.. ) <br /> <br />TUESDAY <br /> <br />FEBRUARY 22, 1972 <br /> <br />Council acknowledged with appreciation the 1971 Annual Report of the <br /> <br />Martinsville Volunteer Fire Company and, through members of the Company <br /> <br />present, commended the Company for its outstanding and continuing contribution <br /> <br />to the people of Martinsville through its excellent fire prevention and fire <br /> <br />protection programs. <br /> <br />Council continued for further consideration two resolutions pertaining to <br /> <br />the Brookdale Road reconstruction project, one of which would endorse the <br /> <br />Virginia Highway Department's plans for the location and constructing of <br /> <br />Brookdale Road and the second (of which) would authorize and request the <br /> <br />Highway Department to acquire the necessary rights-of-way for said project, <br /> <br />with the City agreeing to reimburse the State Highway Department to the <br /> <br />extent of fifteen per cent of all costs incurred in said acquisition and <br /> <br />conveyances. <br /> <br />Council received--and referred to the Planning Commission for its consideration <br /> <br />and recommendation--a petition filed by Lester Lumber Company., Inc. requesting <br /> <br />the rezoning to "M-l" of its recently-acquired property located at 212 Franklin <br /> <br />Street for the purpose of allowing the conduct of a wholesale mercantile <br /> <br />business at this location. <br /> <br />City Manager Noland informed Council that he has been unsuccessful in his <br /> <br />recent attempt to employ an additional police officer within the guidelines <br /> <br />of both the Federal Government and the City's Police Department under a Federal <br /> <br />program of financial assistance, availability of which was withdrawn February 1, <br /> <br />1972. <br />
