BO

TUESDAY

FEBRUARY 8, 1972

,,-..

volume exceeding a certain limit be required to purchase the larger containers,

with some businesses with very large volume being encouraged to purchase

compacting equipment. It was also brought out that some interest has been

indicated by a private firm to contract with local business firms to collect

and dispose of cardboard refuse which, if done, would decrease the total volume

for the City to collect. After some discussion, Council authorized the

preparation of proposed revisions to the refuse collection ordinance, toward

accommodating the recommended commercial collection system, for Council's

consideration.

.-

Upon being advised that a request--impending--for the extending of a City water

line for a distance of some 1,500 feet along Route 58 East, outside the City's

corporate limits, is anticipated, Council authorized City officials to study

this matter along with the petitioner and the Planning Commission.

Councilman Harry L. Boaz informed Council that he is in receipt of a petition

submitted by a number of residents along or near a section of Liberty Street

(Route 108), requesting the widening of said Liberty Street to the north

corporate limits and, also, the installation of a left-turn lead-green traffic

signal to accommodate southbound or eastbound traffic at the intersection of

Liberty Street and Clearview Drive, pointing out that present conditions alongside

Liberty Street are hazardous to pedestrians. City Manager Noland informed Council

that efforts have been and are being made to obtain State assistance in the

widening project. Meanwhile, Council requested of City Manager Noland and

Traffic-Planning Director McGhee an immediate study towards alleviating the

traffic congestion at the foregoing intersection. Several citizens present also

cited certain traffic hazards at specific locations.
