H! I
u \.) ...

TUESDAY

NOVEMBER 23, 1971

Continuing from its November 9th meeting the matter brought before Council

by Councilman Boaz, viz., the need for developing a playground facility

in the Chatham Heights area, Council was informed by representatives of

the Chatham Heights Baptist Church that the church will sell to the City

a tract of land the church owns, consisting of 7~ acres situated to the

rear of the main church facility and adjoining other City-owned property,

for the sum of $5,500.00 although the property is valued at $11,000.00,

if the City will develop same for recreational usage. Public Works

Director George W. Brown informed Council that this tract could be

developed, contingent upon funds, into a neighborhood-type facility and,

also, with the acquisition of other property between the City's Prison

Farm and the City's "Poorhouse Farm" properties, a municipally-operated

golf course could be developed. It was brought out that Federal funds

might be made available toward acquiring both the Chatham Heights Baptist

Church property and the other properties hereinbefore mentioned, for which

acquisition no funds have been provided in the City's current budget.

Representatives of the church then indicated that they believed an

arrangement could be made whereby payment for their property could be

deferred until July l, 1972, meanwhile expressing the hope that the City

would begin developing the property. Councilman Hobson, expressing accord

with the Chatham Heights project, reminded Council that there remains a

pressing need also for the development of recreational facilities in the

West End area, for which a 14-acre tract has been made available, in which

Recreation Director Herbert O. Hughes concurred. Whereupon motion, duly

seconded and carried, Council went on record as requesting the Chatham

Heights Baptist Church to give to the City an option to purchase the
