?t::
N','

TUESDAY

MARCH 12, 1974

with delay in the delivery of the vehicles and that to grant the Dealer's request would be

a bad precedent for the City. Mayor West explained that while Council had sympathy for

the position of the dealer, Council felt that it would not be proper for the City to

supplement the amount arrived at in the bidding procedure. On motion made, seconded,

and carried unanimously, Council regretfully denied the request of Piedmont Dodge.

,,-

Mr. John J. Hartley, Attorney at Law, appeared before Council on behalf of the owners-

operators of taxicabs licensed to operate in the City of Martinsville and requested

certain increases in the rates or tariffs heretofore established by Council, citing

considerable operational cost increases which have taken place over the last several

years as a basis for the requested rate increases. Council approved said requested

increases through its adoption of the following ordinance amending Section 16-41 of

the City Code:

BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Martinsville, Virginia, in
regular meeting assembled this twelfth day of March, 1974, that Section
l6-4l of the CODE OF THE CITY OF MARTINSVILLE (l97l), and as amended, be
and is hereby further amended to read as follows:

Section 16-41.

Meter, etc., rates.

No owner or operator of any taxicab operated under a
certificate of public convenience and necessity issued
under this article shall charge for the hire thereof a
sum that shall be greater or lesser than in accordance
with the following rates of hire:
For the first one-fourth of a mile, or
fraction thereof . . . . . . . . . . $0.50
For each succeeding one-seventh mile,
or fraction thereof . . . . . . $O.lO
In addition to the foregoing charges:
For each trunk, if handled by the

driver. . . . . . . . . . . . . .. .... $0.30

For placing large bundles or packages
or groceries into a cab and removing
therefrom into a residence or other
bu il ding . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $ 0 . 30
For each two minutes waiting time ..... $0.l5
There shall be no charge for extra passengers or
handbags.

BE IT FURTHER ORDAINED by said Council that this ordinance shall be in effect
on and after April l, 1974.
