6f)
. ,..,

TUESDAY

SEPTEMBER 11, 1973

the City Manager recommend doing--will cost approximately $18,216.00, less a

small insurance recovery. In accepting this recommendation, Council authorized

the repairing of said generator.

Council acknowledged receipt of a notice of application recently filed by the

Virginia Telephone & Telegraph Company with the State Corporation Commission,

seeking a general rate increase on its telephone service to its subscribers,

with public hearing thereon scheduled by the State Corporation Commission at

10:00 A.M., November 26, 1973, in Richmond, Virginia. In a prepared statement,

Mayor West reviewed the succession of recent rate increases granted Lee Telephone

Company before it became merged (April, 1973) with Virginia Telephone & Telegraph

Company, and also pointed out that the now-parent company was granted a rate

increase in February of 1972. Because of the recent several rate increases, as

well as their extensiveness, allowed the telephone systems serving Martinsville,

Henry County, Patrick County and Franklin County, and because of the belief

that additional increases are not justifiable at this time or in the near

future, Council unanimously went on record as being in opposition to the

application and, furthermore, issued an invitation to area governmental

jurisdictions to join with the City in intervening in this case and in opposing

the rate increase application, suggesting that such intervention and opposition

be handled legally in the same manner as in the last intervention.

City Manager Noland reported that a problem involving bus service for school

children residing in areas east of Barrows Mill Road appears to have been

resolved.

_---'-"'--""'--,...-.".,-,,-k.',"-"-'~".'"."
