..,

"

6'

TUESDAY

JANUARY 23, 1973

The City Manager and Acting Clerk was requested to send copies of the adopted

resolution to the various members of the Planning District Commission and to govern-

mental leaders of the Planning District.

.-

The City Manager reported that subsequent to the last meeting of Council he had

received a letter from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development,

with the information that HUD had allocated approximately $41,000, representing the

maximum Federal share of the cost of acquisition and development of a recreational

area in Chatham Heights, as well as for the development of a recreational area in

the West End section of the City, near and to the west of Roundabout Road. Mayor

West thanked Councilman Boaz for his special interest in the Chatham Heights area,

and Councilman Hobson for a like interest in development of the West End section.

The City Attorney explained that in its current session, the Virginia General Assembly

is considering three bills having to do with tax relief for the elderly, with each of

the three pending bills taking a different approach to this situation. In view of

Council's continued interest in some method of providing tax relief for the elderly,

the City Manager was requested to advise those Senators and Delegates who represent

the City that City Council will depend on their knowledge of and grasp of the

situation to find the best legislative solution possible, on the State level.

Upon being advised that there is a very strong possibility that the State will

adopt a single statewide Building Code, and that the choice of codes might not be

the "Southern Standard Code" which Martinsville has been using for a number of

years, on motion made and duly seconded, Council expressed unanimous support for

retention of the Southern Standard Code and authorized such fact to be make known

formally to the proper State officials, at upcoming public hearings.
