<br />Without any inference that such things were rare, the City Manager noted that he
<br />
<br />had been given a copy of a deed executed in 1781 by Thomas Jefferson, then Governor
<br />
<br />of Virginia and later President, in which deed the Governor had authorized the
<br />
<br />transfer of 670 acres of public lands to a Henry County citizen for the sum of
<br />
<br />three pounds ten schillings, as well as a Deed of Trust dated 1782 on which Patrick
<br />
<br />Henry was one of two parties of the second part.
<br />
<br />Noting that census records indicate that apparently separate census figures for
<br />
<br />the Town of Martinsville were not compiled until the census of 1900, and for the
<br />
<br />convenience of historians, official census data were included, as follows:
